New Bedford Delegation Visits Anholt OWF

The delegation from a small port city on the East coast, New Bedford, Massachusetts, led by Mayor Jonathan Mitchell, visited the Anholt offshore wind farm on Friday.

After they arrived in Grenaa, two boats took them to the wind farm site.

This is the first time we’ve all seen a wind farm in construction. We’re all kind of giddy about it,” said New Bedford Economic Development Council Executive Director Matthew Morrissey, expressing their excitement.

The wind farm, owned by Dong Energy and two pension funds, will consist of 111 Siemens 3.6MW wind turbines, with a total capacity of 400MW.

Construction works started in 2012, and as Siemens said on Friday, there are currently 46 of wind turbines that are generating power.

The Anholt offshore wind farm is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

The delegation is trying to collect as much information as possible, as the State is investing $100 million in the construction of a New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal, which will be a first-in-the-nation facility designed to support offshore wind turbines.
