DONG to Complete Drilling of 3 7-8 S Well

DONG E & P Norge AS, operator of production licence 147, is about to complete drilling of wildcat well 3/7-8 S. The well proved oil and gas.

The drilling took place two kilometres south of the Trym field in the southern part of the North Sea.

The primary exploration target for the well was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks (the Sandnes and Bryne formations). The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in the Maureen formation in the Palaeocene.

Oil and gas were proven in a gross column of 159 metres in the Sandnes and Bryne formations with reservoir rocks and reservoir quality as expected. The well encountered the Maureen formation with reservoir rocks and reservoir quality as expected, but it was dry.

The preliminary estimation of the size of the discovery is between one and two million Sm2 of recoverable oil equivalents. The licensees will assess whether the discovery, which is part of the same licence as the Trym field, is commercial.

Production licence 147 was awarded in 1988 (12th licensing round). Well 3/7-8 S is the fourth exploration well in the production licence.

The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 3688 and measured depth of 4143 metres below the sea surface and terminated in the Permian (the Zechstein Group). Water depth at the site is 65 metres. The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 3/7-8 S was drilled by the Maersk Giant drilling facility which will now proceed to neighbouring licence 289 to drill wildcat well 3/7-9 S where DONG E&P Norge AS is the operator.
