Barge Leaking Fuel Near Cape Cod

BOSTON – A barge has spilled at least 14,700 gallons of fuel oil in Buzzards Bay, the Coast Guard said Monday.

Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Keith Alholm said that a 12-foot by 2-foot crack had been found in barge No. 120, owned by Bouchard Transportation Co. Inc., which was en route from Philadelphia to the Mirant Oil Facility in Cape Cod Canal. The problems were reported at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The spill of No. 6 fuel oil has been contained by booms, Alholm said. But Alholm didn’t know if the leak had been plugged or how much escaped before the booms were put in place.
